The purpose of the License Plate Recognition and Display is to raise overall awareness of speeding in hopes to reduce the accidents that occur because of it, on and around campus. The License Plate Recognition will radar the speed of passing cars. If they are going faster than the speed limit, the system will then use an Optical Recognition Camera to read the characters on their license plate and display their speed to indicate them to slow down. Our project is different from existing speed radar signs because it adds a personalized touch so the driver can mentally register the endangering speed being displayed and their license plate number and slow down. Our project would be its own module that would include a radar, an optical recognition camera, power source, and run on its own algorithm so that you would be able to display the module below the already existing speed radar signs. Speeding is very problematic and dangerous for not only those driving, but everyone around them. 95% of the people we surveyed agreed that most of the traffic accidents they see are accidents due to speeding. We know that it is difficult to stop speeding entirely, but we hope that by reducing speeding by small percentages incrementally we will help benefit the community over-time.
